Herman Melville had almost completed a ‰ÛÏromance about the whaling industry‰۝ when he met a man named Hawthorne whose literary theories greatly influenced him. When Melville returned to his whaling yarn, he did so with the notion of creating a new kind of romantic hero. The result was Moby Dick. This unit explores Melville‰۪s career in American literature and such works as Moby Dick, Bartleby the Scrivener, and Billy Budd.
